SYDNEY

The program

The content of New Zealand & Australian CAMINO CLASSES and WORKSHOPS.

After 7 intensive hours each participant will:

1. Understand & appreciate the universal pull & magical attraction this pilgrimage walk has not only on contemporary Europeans but non-Europeans alike (New Zealanders & Australians).
2. Appreciate, understand and then incorporate various aspects of the historical, geographical, religious & cultural contexts of the CAMINO into their own pilgrimage.
3. Have gained greater intercultural or cross cultural competencies; including intercultural sensitivity & empathy (understanding & communicating differences).
4. Understand the current practices, procedures & etiquette of being a modern day pilgrim including the pilgrim passport registration or credencial system & what is required to legally obtain the Latin certificate called the Compostela on reaching Santiago de Compostela, including the refuges existing to welcome bona fide pilgrims.
5. Know how much to budget for and the daily living costs that includes accommodation/laundering, food/drink and out of pocket expenses.
6. Appreciate the basic principles of the Spanish language & its pronunciation with specific reference to using that target language when doing the CAMINO & very specific Spanish language terminology that should be known before undertaking the journey.
7. Know what to do for the physical preparation of one’s body and what to take & not take in one’s backpack and know what to do when physical problems may occur to one’s feet & other parts of one’s anatomy when walking the CAMINO & where to seek help or in other words: know the preventive measures that are in your control & how to avoid major problems.
8. Obtain insights into the psychology & philosophy of undertaking these long distance walks & the issues which need to be addressed before, during and after.
9. Learn to analyse Spanish websites (in Spanish) in order to get up to date information about refuges and their facilities.
10. Learn about the regional foods and drinks of Navarra, La Rioja, Castilla y León and Galicia and where to go to have excellent meals at minimal costs.

The workshops will be very interactive, with appropriate levels of class interaction. Certain practical exercises will teach participants to figuratively «walk the Camino» & as a result will gain a deep understanding & appreciation as to the physical challenges involved in such an undertaking.

Each participant will receive:

• 7 hours of interactive class/workshop time (learning practising training).
• A comprehensive class handbook (new edition updated for 2011!), an invaluable practical guide for walking the Camino.
• Unique lists (what to take, what to wear, language, the very best internet sites for researching and referencing).
• One material badge brilliantly designed to identify you from Australia/New Zealand which can be attached to your backpack.
• Post-class/workshop privileges for ongoing consultations with Marc Grossman by email.
